Timeline is the story of your workday as it happens. It’s where you can review all of your activities, whether collected automatically by Laurel or created manually by you. Navigate to Timeline using the tab on the left-hand side of Laurel.

Timeline Overview

Your Timeline is organized chronologically and shows you all of the relevant information you need for each activity at a glance. This includes:

  • start time

  • an icon to indicate the activity type (call, email, research, or document)

  • duration in minutes and seconds

  • activity title (eg. email subject line, document title)

  • activity details (other supporting information)

  • assigned by (either yourself or by Laurel)

An activity has two states:

  1. Unassigned: A grey activity does not belong to an Initiative and you’ll need to assign it accordingly.

  2. Assigned: This activity belongs to an initiative, and will be labeled with a consistent initiative color

See our Assigning Time article for more information.

Timeline Fidelity

We know your timekeeping practices are unique, so we've given you control over the granularity of your collected activities. By default, Laurel displays activities lasting 30 seconds or longer. This is called our balanced setting. However, you can choose to see more or less detail with the following settings:

  • Meticulous: Shows activities lasting 10 seconds or more

  • Balanced: Shows activities lasting 30 seconds or more

  • High-level: Shows activities lasting 3 minutes or more

See our article on Account Settings to learn how to adjust your Timeline's fidelity.

Navigating Your Timeline

Minimum Activity Filter

Select a duration filter for your Timeline to display activities that are equal to or greater than 10s, 30s, 2m, or 6m. The default filter will be set to 30s.

Date Navigation

The date you are viewing is displayed in the top left corner of your window. Use the left/right arrows to move between weeks, then select the corresponding letter of the day of the week to view. If you are viewing a past day, you can also use the double arrow to navigate back to the current calendar day.

Time Bar

The Time Bar displays a bird's eye view of where you've spent time across 24 hours. Each block is filled depending on how much time you've accounted for during a 1-hour period. Use the Time Bar to navigate to a certain time in your day by clicking the corresponding block.

Hour Blocks

Hour Blocks allow you to scan your day and assign activities in bulk based on the time they were performed. Navigate to an hour using the Time Bar and click the selection box for the hour to select all activities. You can assign by typing ‘A’ or clicking “Assign” on the bottom right of the screen.

Each hour block shows you the number of activities as well as the total time collected within that hour. You can collapse and expand hour blocks to condense your Timeline view as you move through your day.

Note: The total time displayed in the hour blocks will be the sum of the total duration of all activities that had a start time within the hour. You may see this be more than an hour. Some examples of this:

  • You were on a meeting for 60m starting at 11am, and completed other activities within that hour

  • You joined a Zoom call at 10:59am after completing a full hours worth of work between 10am-10:59am

  • You have both a Zoom call with the accurate time spent, and a corresponding calendar activity

Open Time

This feature is designed to shed light on periods that we might not have captured, such as offline work, allowing you to manage these blocks more effectively.

You can select these thresholds from the filter options in the search bar, available in the Timeline view. If you've chosen an Open Time threshold, a filter badge will appear in the search bar. If you select 'No Open Time', no filter badge will show.

The Open Time threshold is flexible, allowing you to select the duration that suits your working style. The options available are:

  • No Open Time: You won't see any open time slots in your Timeline view.

  • 2 minutes (Default): You'll see an open time slot if more than 2 minutes pass without an activity. This is the default setting on your first login.

  • 6 minutes: This setting shows an open time slot if more than 6 minutes pass without an activity.

  • 12 minutes: This option displays an open time slot if more than 12 minutes pass without an activity.

Daily Initiative List

Your Daily Initiative List (DIL) appears on the left of your screen. It contains all of the initiatives where you've assigned time over the last 4 days, and will automatically update if you add a new initiative. You can use your DIL to see the total duration of time attributed to each initiative and quickly assign activities.

Search Your Timeline

Use the Search Bar at the top of your screen to find specific activities on your Timeline. Once you type in key words such as client name, initiative number, or activity details, the filtered results will appear. To quickly select all of the items that appear in your search, click the selection box directly left of the Search Bar.

Adding Activities or Entries

There may be moments in your day, such as time spent on offline activities, that aren't accounted for by Laurel. Add activities or entries manually by using the plus (+) button in the bottom right corner.
